About Spenard La Mex

The backbone of La Mex, Spenard is the oldest and most beloved location we’ve ever had. Set right in the heart of Spenard, we’ve made our mark here!

Recently Spenard has under gone a bit of a renovation, a little “Nip/Tuck” if you will, starting with our new bar — we asked local artist Kerby McGhee to step in and the design he came up with is a true work of art! This one of a kind bar is the result of one of the most labor intensive projects Kerby has ever under taken, adorned with over 17,000 hand cut and hand laid tiles, this mosaic design really comes alive…Classic Mexican tile work with an Alaskan feel!

The trees that are used for the back of the bar are actually remnants from the infamous “Millers reach” fire over 10 years ago in Big Lake Alaska. The trunks used have a sort of caramelized look due to being scorched and they really add to the mystic of not only Alaska, but of Spenard!

During the renovation we unearthed what we now call “The Posse”…a collection of vintage black velvet paintings that were originally hanging in the very first La Mex in 1969! That makes these paintings over 40 years old!

Spenard is it’s own entity and touts itself as “Same town, different attitude,” the Bohemian feel of Spenard makes it THE place to be!
